Montolieu: the little village you absolutely must not miss

1 min read

In the south of France, hidden among mountains and fields, lies a small enchanted village. And if this article starts like a fairy tale, it is probably because this village holds more stories than one could ever know. In the heart of the Aude region stands Montolieu: the village of books.

You will probably arrive via a small bridge, but be careful, there is very little parking space in this village, so try to park at one of the two entrances. It is only when you decide to lose yourself between the walls of Montolieu that the magic will begin to work. Filled with bookshops on every corner, book lovers will no doubt find their happiness there. For the former bad students, this town is also full of history which, I am sure, will take you right back to childhood. Old newspapers, rare books, out‑of‑print editions, and collectors’ items. Hardbacks, paperbacks, Jean de Bonneau editions, or even manga. Whatever you are looking for, you will find it.

A book museum invites you to understand the beginnings of printing, books, illuminated manuscripts, and typography. But the magic of Montolieu does not stop there. Exhibitions and craftspeople are everywhere in the streets, and you may, at the turn of a small lane, discover a new treasure to cherish. Whether you go for the beauty of the place or in the hope of finding a hidden gem, hurry to Montolieu before your new favorite book slips through your fingers. One small warning, however: remember to bring cash, as many of the bookshops do not accept cards.

Montolieu : a historic treasure in the south of France

From prehistoric remains, to the Benedictine abbey of Saint‑Jean‑Baptiste, to the internment camp for Spanish refugees from the Retirada, Montolieu is a place rich in history that will fascinate you with its past and its monuments. There is the Guittard menhir and the stone with cup marks and engraved crosses, which you can see on the façade of a shop, but I will leave it to the most curious among you to find it. The only clue I can give is that it is a national treasure. Finally, my favorite place is a little river hidden in the village under the small bridge.

With a heart that beats to the rhythm of distant lands, Ataraxia’s passion for travel is nothing short of ferocious. She is drawn to the unusual, the offbeat, the places where most people don’t think to go. Whether it’s a hidden alley in a foreign city or a forgotten village nestled in the mountains, she finds beauty and meaning in every corner of the world.
