3 mins read

How many secrets are hidden in the depths of the ocean? The Sea and the Ocean, rivers and streams, all these bodies of water share one secret: they keep our secrets and those of our ancestors. But the Ocean also has its own secrets, which spark great interest in anyone who dares to approach. Here is a list of five films, books, or TV series that might pique your curiosity about the hidden secrets of the ocean.

Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea

Written by Jules Verne, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea tells the story of three castaways captured by Captain Nemo, the inventor of the Nautilus, a submarine with advanced technology. The work of the fantastic and mysterious Jules Verne has nothing to envy from newer stories. And even though the world should read more often the literary works of the incredible Mr. Verne, the old French used in his books can sometimes be challenging to understand. Fortunately, adaptations have been released that make it easier to access Verne’s fantastic writings (or not… according to Verne enthusiasts). For those who love the story of the Nautilus, you can find this mythical submarine in the film adaptation of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. However, it is also referenced in more recent works like the movie Journey 2: The Mysterious Island or Rick Riordan’s book Daughter of the Deep.

To Kill a Kingdom by Alexandra Christo

Enter a world where Sirens and Pirates might be more than just simple enemies. In To Kill a Kingdom, Lira, a dangerous siren, has already taken the hearts of 17 pirates. But when her mother, the queen, turns her into a human to punish her for killing one of her kind, Lira has only one goal in mind: to kill and bring back the heart of Prince Elian to regain her original siren form.On the other hand, Elian loves the sea but despises the creatures that live in it. When he rescues a woman from it, he has no idea that the one who promises to help him in his quest to find a way to kill all the sirens might belong to that very species.Embark on an adventure with Elian and Lira and enter a world where Sirens and Pirates endlessly strive for the same goal: to be the sole rulers of the sea.

H2O / Mako Mermaids

In a much more recent and fantastical genre, we have these two TV series. Both depict the adventures of young women who, overnight, turn into mermaids and gain the power to control water. We follow their adventures as they transform whenever water touches their skin. Unravel the mystery of these Mermaids and discover their origins and the cause of their transformations. These are comedic series aimed at a young audience, but older viewers particularly enjoy them. H2O and Mako Mermaids immerse you in the secrets of the ocean and take you to a world where mermaids and the magic of the moon will transform you into marine creatures.

Daughter of the Deep by Rick Riordan

Mentioned briefly earlier, Daughter of the Deep follows the story of Ana Dakkar, a student at the famous Harding-Pencroft Academy, renowned for training the best marine biologists and explorers in the world. But when her university is attacked, Ana’s world is shaken, especially as she discovers that the main target was none other than herself. Ana is forced to flee and embark on a quest to find the ocean’s best-kept secret: the Nautilus. The creator of the Percy Jackson adventures has taken on the challenge of writing a book about the famous Nautilus and the descendant of the great Captain Nemo.

Dive Club

In the world of Netflix, one series caught our attention for its close connection to the secrets of the ocean: Dive Club. This Australian series first aired in 2021 and follows a group of teenage girls passionate about diving, who are determined to find their best friend Lauren. Lauren Rose has disappeared and is being searched for by the entire town, but when her best friends, in their quest to find her, discover her phone, they learn that Lauren had made a very mysterious discovery about a ship located in an area considered dangerous for diving. The group of four friends is determined to find their fifth member and much more: to uncover the secret that she went to such lengths to hide.

Bonus: I won’t dwell on it for too long because I think every reader of this article will already know it, but don’t hesitate to watch or rewatch the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, which delves into several marine myths, featuring sirens, treasures, and ghost ships like the Flying Dutchman. Accompanied by the famous Jack Sparrow, all you have to do is sit back, relax, and enjoy the myths of the ocean.

With a heart that beats to the rhythm of distant lands, Ataraxia’s passion for travel is nothing short of ferocious. She is drawn to the unusual, the offbeat, the places where most people don’t think to go. Whether it’s a hidden alley in a foreign city or a forgotten village nestled in the mountains, she finds beauty and meaning in every corner of the world.
