Released in 2024 with only one season to its name, Dead Boy Detectives is the macabre series you can’t miss. Even though death is a central theme of the show, you’ll never want to be a ghost as much as you will while watching it.

An Engaging Plot

Edwin and Charles are not your typical teenagers. In fact, even though they may appear to be the same age, they actually have a huge age gap. That’s because they’re ghosts. Having been dead for decades, the best friends have started their own detective agency, The Dead Boy Detectives… and they’re really good at it! Quickly joined by Crystal, a psychic, and their friend Niko, they must confront an evil witch, solve disappearances, face the king of cats, and much more.

An Almost Perfect Cast

The cast of Dead Boy Detectives, all incredibly talented, delivers excellent performances in this Netflix series. Jayden Revri plays Charles Rowland, George Rexstrew portrays Edwin Payne, Briana Cuoco is Jenny, Kassius Nelson plays Crystal, and Yuyu Kitamura takes on the role of Niko. You’ll also see Lukas Gage, Ruth Connel, and Michael Beach in supporting roles.

A Comic Book Origin

The Dead Boy Detectives originally appeared in a comic series, debuting in Sandman, created by Neil Gaiman and Matt Wagner. The show was produced by Berlanti Productions, Jeremy Carver Productions, DC Entertainment, and Warner Bros. Television Studios, and created by Steve Yockey. Unfortunately, the series was canceled after just one season, much to our dismay.

Sandman and Dead Boy Detectives

Although the Dead Boy Detectives come from the Sandman comics, you don’t need to watch Sandman or read the comics to enjoy or understand DBD. The series is well-structured and provides all the necessary context to follow the episodes.

A Premature End

As mentioned earlier, Netflix has already made its decision, and there will be no second season of Dead Boy Detectives. Despite mostly positive reviews—92% on Rotten Tomatoes and 3.4 on Allociné—Netflix decided it wasn’t enough. The series only stayed in the Top 10 of English-language series for less than three weeks after its release, prompting the platform to cancel the second season quickly.

A Difficult Decision for Dead Boy Detectives’ Fans

Despite the controversial decision to cancel DBD, fans are strongly opposed to it. Many hashtags have circulated on social media in an effort to bring back the adventures of the two best friends. Unfortunately, there are no plans to bring Edwin, Charles, and Crystal back at this time.

As always, we’re here to be honest with you, and we’re not fans of this decision. We truly believe the series deserved a second chance, especially since it seems the filming for season 2 was already completed. But, unfortunately, we don’t have a say in the matter, and Netflix seems to be ignoring the pleas of their fans.

If you haven’t watched this show yet, we’ve left the link here for you.

For those who have already seen (or rewatched) Dead Boy Detectives, we’ve discovered a new series that we’re sure you’ll love!

With a heart that beats to the rhythm of distant lands, Ataraxia’s passion for travel is nothing short of ferocious. She is drawn to the unusual, the offbeat, the places where most people don’t think to go. Whether it’s a hidden alley in a foreign city or a forgotten village nestled in the mountains, she finds beauty and meaning in every corner of the world.
