It’s not a new series, but we love it so much that we have to talk about it: Lockwood & Co. This British series, with 8 episodes on Netflix, is based on the book series of the same name by Jonathan Stroud.
Lockwood & Co and the Ghost Stories
Welcome to Lockwood & Co, an agency specializing in the cleansing of haunted estates. But instead of hunting rats, they’re after ghosts. The agency is made up of Anthony Lockwood, Lucy Carlyle, and George Karim—three friends bound by their special abilities. Anthony is a “shiner,” able to sense the supernatural through his touch. Lucy is a “listener,” able to hear the torment experienced by the dead. George handles research, being the brain of the team.

After a mission leaves her best friend in a permanent coma and kills the rest of her team, Lucy flees her hometown for London. There, she visits all the major agencies in hopes of finding work as a listener. However, she’s rejected from each one due to a lack of identification papers—until she stumbles upon Lockwood & Co, an independent agency run by Anthony Lockwood.
From one mystery to another and haunted house to haunted house, the team will risk their lives to protect London from the most dangerous ghosts in the city.
Actors Under 30
Most of the cast members of the series are under 30. In Lockwood & Co, only teenagers can see ghosts, so the lead actors naturally need to look young. For this reason, the show has an almost entirely under-30 cast, with the only older actors being in secondary roles.
No Season 2 for Lockwood & Co
Yet another series that got the axe from Netflix, and another major disappointment for fans. Despite the great audience ratings—4.7 on Google, 4/5 on Allociné, 7.4/10 on IMDb, and 94% on Rotten Tomatoes—Lockwood & Co will not be renewed for a second season. Unfortunately, like Dead Boy Detectives, Netflix will probably not change its decision, no matter how much the fans ask. Honestly, it’s getting a bit tiring to see Netflix canceling its best shows prematurely.

An Interesting Character Evolution
Unlike many series, Lockwood & Co offers an interesting evolution of its characters. Whether it’s Lucy or Lockwood, we see them push their limits with each episode. Lucy grows more powerful with her abilities, while Lockwood deepens his relationships with his two teammates. Throughout the episodes, we see each of them evolve and overcome personal hurdles.
Ruby Stokes’ portrayal of Lucy is the most fascinating, in my opinion. At the beginning of the series, Lucy is completely controlled by her mother and instructors. But as she faces increasingly painful experiences, she gradually emancipates herself and takes control of her destiny. She also begins to discover the full extent of her powers—at the cost of some personal sacrifices. These powers, in fact, could begin to impact her health.

A Must-Watch Series
Lockwood & Co is a series you absolutely must watch. For those of you who prefer books, you can follow the adventures of the agents in Jonathan Stroud’s original book series. With 5 volumes available, you can immerse yourself in the tales of Lucy, Lockwood, and George.
The series is still available on Netflix, and here’s the link for you to check it out.
