The indie rock quartet Dubinski returns with their sophomore album, What Is Your Definition Of Happiness?, released on March 7, 2025, via Gnu Roam and Kartel Music Group. Expanding on the high-energy sound of their self-titled debut, the band—comprised of the Gaine brothers Eugene, Fergus, Donal, and Eoin—takes a more introspective and ambitious approach with this record, exploring the pursuit and fragility of happiness.

A Sonic Evolution

Produced by Grammy Award winners Mike Horner (Franz Ferdinand, Placebo, Hot Chip) and Robbie Nelson (Beck, Royal Blood, The Kooks), What Is Your Definition Of Happiness? offers a dynamic mix of driving guitar riffs, infectious melodies, and socially conscious lyricism. Their sound, reminiscent of Franz Ferdinand, Parquet Courts, The Clash, and Maximo Park, takes on new depth as they incorporate fresh elements while staying true to their indie rock roots.

Themes of Love, Loss, and Perseverance

The album is thematically rich, balancing moments of exhilaration with stark reflections on personal struggles. From the heartbreak-laden “What’s Even Normal” to the harsh realities of being a DIY touring band in “New York Arizona and This”, Dubinski crafts a compelling narrative of hope and hardship. “Action Comes To Town” tackles shattered dreams, while “Downtown Operation”, featuring a sample of union leader Arthur Scargill, critiques systemic injustice and the blindness of political leaders.

Standout Tracks

  • “Feel It”: A short but electrifying burst of rock ‘n’ roll energy, filled with choppy guitars and propulsive rhythms, reminiscent of early Franz Ferdinand. The track delves into the idea of learning and evolving through observation and experience.
  • “Downtown Operation”: A politically charged anthem underscored by a hypnotic synth loop, shedding light on economic disparity and inspired by the socialist values passed down by the Gaine brothers’ parents.
  • “Making Luck”: A track that captures the bittersweet essence of the album—both uplifting and melancholic, with soaring harmonies and a relentless beat.

A Personal Touch

The band’s personal history deeply informs their music. Their name, Dubinski, is a tribute to their late mother, whose passing occurred just as they were signing their record deal. This emotional undercurrent gives the album added weight, as themes of grief, resilience, and growth are intricately woven into each track.

Happiness Is…

With What Is Your Definition Of Happiness?, Dubinski proves they are more than just another indie rock band. Their ability to blend razor-sharp social commentary with anthemic melodies makes this record an engaging and thought-provoking listen. Whether you’re drawn to their high-energy instrumentation, poignant lyrics, or infectious hooks, this album is a must-hear for fans of indie rock with substance. A bold and emotionally charged release, it solidifies Dubinski as a band that continues to evolve and challenge expectations.

A natural-born writer and poet, Atanaria’s pen dances with a rhythm that only she knows. Her passion for the unspoken, the mysterious, and the forgotten led her to create The Nerdy Virginias—a publication that would later evolve into Asteria, a testament to her love for the hidden corners of culture. Here, she explores the fringes of society, where subcultures thrive away from the blinding lights of the mainstream.
