AtanariaFontfroide Abbey was founded in 1093 and takes its name from its proximity to the “Fons Frigidus,” or cold fountain. Located not far from Narbonne, the abbey was originally built on land generously donated to a few monks by the Viscount of Narbonne. However, the abbey’s significant history began around 1145 when it became affiliated with the Cistercian order, which emphasized poverty, austerity, and architectural simplicity.
The abbey grew to house a community of 80 monks and 250 lay brothers. Throughout its existence, it has witnessed many historical events. Today, it is a renowned monument that can be visited. For an entrance fee of €14 for adults, you can spend between 1 hour and 15 minutes to 1 hour and 30 minutes touring this historic site rich in history.
