First released in 2017 on Netflix, “Cable Girls” is a Spanish series that follows the adventures of Lidia, Angeles, Carlota, and Marga, four operators at the first telephone company in Madrid.
Created by Ramon Campos, Teresa Fernandez-Valdes, and Gema Neira, “Las Chicas del Cable” details the lives of these four women dreaming of independence and freedom.
The series’ voice-over is none other than Lidia Aguilar, one of the four protagonists.
Accused of murder, Alba has no choice but to flee and create a new identity under the name Lidia. To do this, she moves to Madrid and gets a job at the Madrid telephone company, where she meets her three friends Angeles, Maria, and Carlota. There, her double identity will be tested when she encounters one of the company’s executives and the husband of the director’s daughter, who happens to be her childhood love: Francisco Gomez.
Angeles Vidal is the mother of a young girl. Married to a violent man, she submits to her husband’s desires to protect her daughter. With the help of her new friends, she asserts herself to create a better future for herself and her daughter.
Marga Suarez is the most timid of the four friends. Coming from a modest background, her family lives in the countryside. She moves to the city because she dreams of more. We get to see the growth of a woman in an environment very different from the one she grew up in.
Carlota Rodriguez de Senillosa comes from a wealthy family. Carlota dreams of independence and rebels against her father, who has deprived her of freedom. A fervent feminist, she fiercely fights for women’s rights. She is also part of the LGBTQIA+ community, initially coming out as a lesbian and later fighting for the rights of her partner Oscar, who was born in a female body.
These four friends face significant challenges that have the power to radically change the status of women in Spanish society. They fight for women’s rights, the truth, and the rights of LGBTQIA+ individuals. Confronted with various issues, these four women will make difficult choices and take risks for the causes they care about. The series follows them up to the Spanish Civil War, where they will once again face problems bigger than those they are used to. The war wreaks havoc and may claim some of the characters at the heart of this Spanish series.
In this series, where the role of women is constantly questioned, we follow strong and intrepid women for five seasons, ready to do anything for each other. Their friendship saves them more than once and allows them to accomplish things that seemed impossible at the time. It is a series necessary for every girl and woman, to remind them of the importance of defending their convictions, their rights, and their place in society. More than just entertaining, it is a historical reminder of struggles that took place not so long ago and, unfortunately, are still ongoing for some.
If you haven’t yet watched this series full of twists and turns, you should seriously start it right away. And for those who have already seen it, don’t hesitate to get swept away once again by this story that is both entertaining and important.
